A Beautiful Extended Family Session at Farragut State Park, Athol, ID

There is something special about gathering the whole family together for photographs—especially when several generations can be in one place at the same time. This extended family session at Farragut State Park in North Idaho was the perfect example. With the mountains and Lake Pend Oreille creating a beautiful backdrop, we were able to capture both the entire family together and smaller family groupings that tell the story of each generation.

A North Idaho Setting for a Family Gathering

Farragut State Park offers so many different settings within one location. For this session, we used the beautiful mountain views, tall trees, open grasses, and natural surroundings to create variety throughout the photographs.

The large family portrait with the mountains and lake in the background is one of my favorite ways to photograph an extended family. It gives everyone a place in the story while also showcasing the beautiful North Idaho landscape.

And with little ones, babies, and several generations together, there were plenty of genuine moments happening in between the posed photographs.

Family Photos That Feel Like Your Family

Extended family sessions can sometimes feel overwhelming simply because there are so many people to coordinate. My goal is to keep the process organized while still allowing the session to feel relaxed and natural.

We'll start with the larger family photographs and then work through the smaller groupings. Once the combinations we need are finished, there is time to let things relax and capture the children and families more naturally.

The result is a gallery that includes the important formal portraits and the little moments that make your family yours.

Family Photography at Farragut State Park

Farragut State Park is a beautiful option for families looking for a North Idaho family photography location. The combination of mountain views, Lake Pend Oreille, forest, and open spaces provides plenty of variety without needing to travel between multiple locations.

Whether you're planning an extended family gathering, celebrating a milestone, or simply want to document your family as it is right now, a location like Farragut makes a beautiful backdrop.

And with little ones growing so quickly, these photographs become more than just pictures from a family vacation or gathering. They become a record of this particular chapter of your family.

Some of the best moments happen when we stop posing and start playing.

Capturing Every Family Connection

With a large extended family, I don't want the session to be just one large photograph.

We also photographed smaller family groupings, grandparents with grandchildren, individual families, siblings, and the newest little members of the family.

These smaller photographs become especially meaningful over time. A photograph of the entire family shows who was there, but the smaller photographs often capture how everyone was connected.

For this family, the session included grandparents, adult children, grandchildren, and babies—a beautiful snapshot of a family continuing to grow.
