Choosing Between a Mini Session and a Full Family Session

Every fall, I hear the same question:

"Should we book a mini session or a full family session?"

The answer depends entirely on what you're hoping to capture.

While mini sessions are wonderful, they're not the best fit for every family. My goal is to help you choose the experience that gives you the photos you'll truly love for years to come.

Here's a simple breakdown to help you decide.

Mini Sessions Are Perfect If...

Mini sessions are designed to be quick, simple, and efficient.

They work well for families who:

  • Need just a handful of updated family portraits

  • Have children who warm up quickly

  • Love the featured seasonal location

  • Want holiday cards or one updated family photo

  • Have photographed with me before and know what to expect

Mini sessions are scheduled on specific dates, at one location, with a shorter session time.

They're a great option when everyone is ready to smile, have fun, and move through the session quickly.

A Full Family Session Is Better If...

A full session gives us time to slow down and create images that tell your family's story.

A full session may be the better choice if you have:

  • Young toddlers who need time to adjust

  • Multiple generations

  • Larger families

  • Children with special needs

  • Pets you'd like included

  • Several outfit changes

  • A specific location in mind

  • A desire for candid moments and genuine connection

With more time together, children can relax, personalities shine, and we can capture both posed portraits and authentic moments.

Many of my favorite images happen after everyone forgets the camera is even there.

What About the Kids?

Parents often worry that their children won't cooperate.

Here's the good news...

Kids don't have to sit perfectly still or smile the entire time.

Whether we're playing games, exploring a trail, cuddling together, or chasing little ones through a field, those moments often become the images families treasure most.

The biggest difference is that a full session gives us the time to let those moments happen naturally.

Mini Sessions Have Limitations

Because mini sessions are scheduled back-to-back, there simply isn't extra time if someone needs a few more minutes to warm up.

Mini sessions also include:

  • One pre-selected location

  • One date

  • Shorter session time

  • Fewer final images

They're designed for efficiency—and that's exactly what makes them such a great value.

Full Sessions Offer More Flexibility

When you book a full session, we can customize your experience.

You'll have:

  • More time together

  • Greater variety of images

  • A location that fits your family's personality

  • Time for kids to explore and have fun

  • More opportunities for genuine connection

If creating artwork for your home or documenting a milestone is important to you, a full session is often the best investment.

Which One Should You Choose?

Choose a Mini Session if you:

  • Want updated family portraits

  • Need a few beautiful images

  • Have older children who photograph well in a shorter session

  • Love the scheduled location

Choose a Full Session if you:

  • Want a relaxed experience

  • Have young children

  • Want more variety

  • Love candid storytelling

  • Want your session tailored specifically to your family

Neither option is better—they simply serve different purposes.

My goal is to help you choose the one that fits your family best.
